Name: R.M.S Arundel Type: Perpetual Calendar with Enamel Crest of RMS Arundel Castle Year: 1938 Set: No Mark: None - None History: This charming desk accessory is a perpetual calendar featuring a removable set of date, month, and weekday cards displayed within a silver-plated frame. The base prominently bears a cloisonné enamel badge of the RMS Arundel Castle, one of the Union-Castle Line’s iconic mail steamers that served on the South Africa route. The hallmark on the reverse indicates it was made by Joseph Fray, a Birmingham silversmith, and is date-stamped for the year 1938. The use of silver plate and the streamlined form suggest it was created as a functional and elegant piece for first-class cabins, officers' quarters, or administrative offices on board. The RMS Arundel Castle (originally launched in 1919 and rebuilt in the 1930s) was a luxurious passenger liner of her era. Calendars like this served a practical purpose but were also treasured mementos of transcontinental travel. This particular design merges Art Deco sensibilities with British maritime pride, evident in the red and blue enamel ship crest bearing the name "R.M.S. ARUNDEL CASTLE." With its original paper cards intact and clear maker's mark, this piece is an excellent example of shipboard luxury objects from the golden age of ocean liners. It holds strong appeal for collectors of shipping memorabilia, Art Deco desk accessories, and British ocean liner history. A rare survivor, both elegant and steeped in nautical heritage.
